one morning, at ten a.m., i received an urgent phone call from the art director of the portland mercury. we need a final illustration by 4 o'clock. can you do that? "yes," i said. six hours and two minutes later, i delivered the drawing seen here. "this is awesome!" she said. which made my day.
the drawing was published immediately. it concerned a news story which begged city hall for adequate representation from neighborhood associations.
few days later, the same art director invited me to submit a cover. the portland mercury is one of my favorite papers. i sketched all weekend!
