this is a self portrait. i drew it for a tape exchange. every year around tax time, my friends and i compile our favorite music and send the discs to one another. most of us make jackets for the jewel cases. my design this year was a blatant rip-off of jack kerouac's Book of Haikus. it is lovely. the haikus are good, of course. mister kerouac has been called "an american haiku master" as a matter of fact. i was especially taken with the cover though: a simple head and shoulder portrait on a white background. see? blatant rip.

as i live with this painting, what i like most about it is how much it reminds me of a haiku. "my haiku shoulders," it says, "my haiku head, lips, eyes, neck. my haiku tattoo."
